About ICL

Welcome to the Institute for Community Living Web site.

I founded the Institute for Community Living (ICL) in 1986 to offer people with psychiatric disabilities the opportunity to lead productive, fulfilling lives within New York City communities. At that time, there were few housing options for people with behavioral and intellectual disabilities. Initially, ICL provided affordable housing with flexible supports, quality treatment services and skills building programs to break the cycle of institutionalization and/or homelessness.

Today, ICL has emerged as a local, regional and national leader in pioneering effective community living services for people with serious mental illness, as well as those with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. In recent years, ICL has reached out to even more New Yorkers, offering accessible, quality health and mental health care, family support, school-based services and more. Today, we touch the lives of over 8,000 people each year in NYC and Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Very simply, ICL's programs and services strive to help individuals and families overcome obstacles, achieve goals and reach their fullest potential. For that reason, ICL has pioneered new rehabilitation and preventive care approaches like residential treatment for individuals who are mentally ill and chemically addicted and wellness self management for people with serious physical as well as behavioral conditions.

For close to a quarter century, our dedicated staff members have shaped ICL into an award-winning, not-for-profit human services organization, where people with complex needs find hope and help. ICL provides pathways to transitional and permanent housing, a variety of case management and rehabilitation services and employment services.

We invite you to learn more. Search for the services that work for you. Find out about the ICL programs near where you live and work. Learn about new advances in treatment and rehabilitation. On behalf of ICL's Board of Directors and our over 1,000 dedicated staff members, WELCOME to our new Web site.
